Four weeks of intensity for one great showcase

I spent the summer at NYU, taking classes in production and design.

That’s So NY

The four week program culminated in a pitch and design process for a hypothetical production based off of Dan Saltzstein’s book of short stories, “That’s So New York.” I chose to work on design for the set with two of my peers. We wanted to capture the whimsy of the novel’s illustrations alongside the grit of New York City, and so we created a picturesque snapshot of the city while maintaining certain elements of grime (like the trash bags in the corner or the industrial style fire escapes). Due to the diverse settings of the short stories, we decided that automation would be the best route to go for our pieces. Our permanent set consists of a set of apartments, a park, a pizza restaurant, and a city skyline in the background. Then, our other elements (typically interiors) would come on and off of stage as needed. These consist of a movie theater, an apartment interior, a bar, a subway car and station, the inside of a restaurant, and more. Pictured below is the model which we created as the final step of this design process (featuring scaled figures of us and our peers).
